Fifth Grade Class Letter Writing
to Nicaraguan Children
The fifth grade Spanish
class completed a project in November that involved writing letters to
children from Nicaragua. This project came about through a
connection with a university class teacher, Lynne Ensworth. Her
college classes used bonus points generated through scholastic book
orders they had placed to order books in Spanish for less fortunate
schools and children in Nicaragua. The fifth grade part was to
write letters about themselves in Spanish. Many students included
drawings and decorated their letter beautifully. We even put
together a small book containing pictures and captions about PLS and
Iowa. Ms. Ensworth was able to hand deliver these books and
letters when she traveled with the Waterloo Rotary to Chinandega,
Nicaragua. She plans to visit our class in the near future
to share her experiences while visiting Nicaragua and the pictures she
took.
