Price Laboratory School Named a Finalist
for National Schools of Character Award
Malcolm
Price Laboratory School (PLS) at the University of Northern Iowa is
one of the top 25 finalists for the 2008 National Schools of Character
(NSOC) awarded by the Character Education Partnership (CEP) in Washington
DC.
Every
year, CEP names 10 public and private schools and districts as National
Schools of Character for outstanding work in character education. The
winning schools display comprehensive, exemplary character education
programs that exemplify CEP's Eleven Principles of Character Education.
Winning schools and districts receive a $20,000 award, half of which
is used for outreach to other schools and districts.
Earlier
this year, PLS was named a 2008 State School of Character by the
state's Institute for Character Development and Iowa Department of
Education. The school also earned this recognition in 2007 for its
character education program.
The
recognition is presented to schools that have developed and sustained
a comprehensive character-development initiative at the school.
"Years
ago, PLS students, staff and parents established our core values called
'PLS Guidelines for Success: Respect, Learning, Responsibility, Attitude
and Integrity,'" said Clare Struck, counselor
at Price Lab School and coordinator for its character education program. "We
instill in our students and teachers the importance of being responsible
and caring citizens. An example of how we purposely do this is
our character-education curriculum, 'Be a Buddy: Not a Bully.'"
The
University of Northern Iowa has a 131-year history in teacher education
and is the leader in Pre-K through 12 education and education-related
issues in Iowa.
